Madoka Hori

Guide profile:

Hello, I'm glad you found me! I write and take photos for a local tourism website (mostly in Japanese). I also translate articles and work for foreign entrepreneurs who want to do business and live in Japan. I work as a freelancer so my schedule is flexible if you are wondering. Meeting new people and talking about each other's culture is exciting! That's one of the main reasons why I considered getting a guide license and here I am. Hope to hear from you soon!

What I love: Photography, Cooking, Books / Kindle, Outdoor sports, Traveling, Baseball, DIY&Crafts, Food and Beer (I don't drink as much as I used to though)

Knowledgeable, friendly, and incredible fluency in a broad range of subjects in English — especially concerning the environs of Kobe, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, etc. She was an absolute pleasure to be with and introduced my wife and I to wonderful sights, food, and alleyways of Southern Japan, emphasizing just what we asked for. You can’t go wrong with this fantastic lady.

We had a really great time with her! If you want to go to the best attraction spots, then Madoka is the guide for you. We had a tour of Osaka Castle, had scrumptious tempura lunch. In Kyoto to see the Fushimi Inari Taisha Shrin and bamboo grove and other good places. She is the best guide, she speaks very good english and we loved how she interacted with us and catered to what interested us. She was not only our private tour guide, but she also became our friend. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER!

Our time with Madoka in Kyoto was amazing. She is incredibly knowledgeable about Kyoto and is fully of energy and enthusiasm. Believe me, if you enjoy walking tours then Makoka is your guide. From temples to shrines, unique sights and food, she knows it all. My wife and I found her to be extremely personable and very easy to talk with. Her English is excellent and we never had a problem communicating. I would strongly recommend Madoka to anyone considering visiting Kyoto.

Madoka was a wonderful tour guide. She is intelligent and educated and very knowledgeable. Unlike many tour guides, her tours do not feel scripted. She visits the site with you, and has a conversation with you as you go, like a knowledgeable local friend. We had many questions about Japanese religion and history and food, and she taught me and my family so much! She is also genuinely kind and sweet. Madoka is the best!

We visited Kyoto in late April and could not be happier that we chose Madoka to be our guide. She gave us wonderful insights into the sites we visited and was very practical in scheduling our limited time. She is a great photographer, and we appreciated that she shared the pictures she took of us. She is very sweet young lady.

Everything was perfect. She speaks English fluently and gave us the real japanese experience. Besides the top attractions, she was always concerned to show us the japanese culture and habits

Lovely guide

We (party of four) hired Madoka for a tour of both Kobe and Kyoto. Her English was excellent. She guided us efficiently to the places we wanted to experience and she was knowledgeable about the details of what we were seeing and doing. She represents real value for the money spent.

Madoka was great! She showed us around Osaka and Kyoto and gave us great insight into Japanese culture, especially the castles and shrines in Kyoto and the food in Osaka. A little bit of Japanese history, tradition and modern customs were also given. Great sense of humor with great conversation. We recommend her tours with great enthusiasm!

Sure, lots of guides know the history and the cool spots. What sets Madoka apart is her friendliness, her ability to plan and then improvise on a plan, and her tireless enthusiasm for Kyoto. We walked almost non-stop for an entire day, saw temples and shrines, ate great food, saw cool sites, , all thanks to Madoka. We talked history, Kanji, politics and even Japanese TV. I feel like I got a tour of Kyoto along with a tour of Japan in one go!

I highly recommend using Madoka as a guide for your personal guide. My daughter and I had a fantastic time on our tour with Madoka. We were able to see lots of things we would never have even known about without her guidance. Madoka was great company, with excellent English for those with no Japanese…more importantly; she has the wonderful gift of listening. Her personality was infectious and she clearly LOVES what she does. Madoka exceeded our expectations and not only filled our days tog

Hiring Madoka was the best decision we ever made! She transformed a Kyoto visit into a fantastic experience of enjoyable learning also acting as our cultural liaison for all things imaginable. She is witty and skilled at delivering historic facts and data mixed with relevant stories and fun anecdotes.

Madoka is a history expert and an enthusiast of Japanese culture, tradition and food. To us she was a gracious friend for whom nothing was too much trouble. Anyone should feel lucky to hire her

Madoka was absolutely wonderful! She is very caring and kind person who made sure that we were comfortable and happy. Since the weather was a bit rainy in Kyoto, she was flexible in adjusting our tour of Kyoto so that we could see the sights better, especially when we went to the Kyomizudera temple. She is knowledgeable about the places in Kyoto. She made our trip fun, and we would definitely use her as our tour guide again!

Great day tour of Kyoto with a great guide!

Saw some great places and took some good photos and got to each a lot more easily than if we'd have been getting transport ourselves!

Well worth it and Madoka is highly recommended.

Madoka is intelligent and extremely knowledgeable about Japan history, religious customs, popular tourist sites, navigating through city streets and metro stations and American baseball!! She is polite and pleasant company. She knows where to eat the best food and where the best restrooms are. You will not be disapointed for one second.

I have the privilege of having Madoka as my tour guide during my visit in Hyogo prefecture earlier this month. She has a deep passion and love for her country. She is a responsive, responsible, knowledgeable, cheerful and lively tour guide. She listens to you patiently, cares about your interests and plan things in detail. Please contact Madoka regardless you are interested in those classic spots or something off-the-beaten path. Can't recommend her highly enough.

Tour Guide Comment: Thank you very much for this wonderful review. I look forward to having you as my guest again in the near future!
