Guide profile:
Having worked in the Corporate world for 16 years as a Chartered Accountant I bring a unique perspective to my tours. The economics of our city and indeed our country are in many ways as unique as the diverse cultures that inhabit it. My wife Liese and I are both passionate, qualified tourist guides and are happy to tailor-make a unique visit to our city and its surrounding areas and provinces. Each tour is different and it depends on you, our guest, as to how much you get out of it. Give us as much information about yourselves and your interests and we will tweak things on our itinerary to suit your needs. Ask us questions and milk us of our knowledge and experience! We learn from our guests as well and love to show you around our beautiful city that is sometimes given a bad rap but which on closer inspection you will find to be a fascinating, caring, avant garde, world leading, ground breaking and historical city. Come and share our home with us for a day or two and you won't be sorry.
Tour guide services/sample itinerary:
Come and join us on a tour to the vibrant downtown area of the City of Gold! Known by many names, Egoli, Jozi and Joburg, the beating heart of South Africa and Africa's economy is enjoying a revival. With many safe and clean areas now open to tourists we take you on a journey to the old parts of the city where you can get a glimpse into the heyday of this Golden Town.
Our first stop is Museum Africa in Newtown where we explore the diverse cultures and early history of Johannesburg. Other parts of the museum include a section on Ghandi, the Rivonia treason trial and a photographic display. The Workers' Museum opposite the Mary Fitzgerald Square is also a fantastic museum to visit - this gives visitors some insight into the working and living conditions of the early Johannesburg residents during the gold boom times. Other attractions include a book shop focussing on African Authors and the Sci-Bono Centre where children and those young at heart are introduced to the wonderful, and sometimes wacky world of Science. Depending on time constraints and interest we could visit the SAB World of Beer for a brief tour of the history of beer and drench our thirsts at the friendly bar.
From here we make our way in our air conditioned vehicle to Hollard Street where we trace the early digging history and stop for a cup of coffee to absorb the beauty and architecture of the downtown area. We then make our way over to the The Standard Bank where we visit the Ferreira stope and Art Gallery. The building is modern, but the bank itself is the oldest in the city and during the construction of the new facilty, this old mining stope was preserved for future genernations. At its peak, this site yielded 10g of gold per ton of gold bearing ore!
On the way back to your accommdation and time permitting we could make a brief stop for some craft shopping in one of the leafy suburbs of Johannesburg...
