The word “Shanghai” first appeared in the Song Dynasty (960–1279). In order to discharge the floods of Wusong River that emptied into the sea near then-Shanghai, 18 canals were dug out of the river. Each canal was called a “pu” in regional dialect. Among these, two canals near the sea were named “Shang Hai Pu” and “Xia Hai Pu” as the former was theoretically closer to the upstream of the Wusong River.

A city is much the same as a living organism. When overlooking the city from high above, one finds that it is closely linked by crisscrossed roads like numerous blood vessels. Those roads are variously addressed in different times and areas. In Shanghai, these back-alley ways are called "Longtang".

In the late 19th century and early 20th century, Shikumen Houses came into being in the foreign concessions of Shanghai. In the European architectural style of closely connected townhouses and with the advantage of occupying less and low costs, the Shikumen Houses were massively built.
